The Colombian National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) is preparing for an auction to explore natural hydrogen, although the timeline remains uncertain. ANH’s technical director, Miguel Armenta, announced at a convention in Santa Marta that the agency is currently identifying potential areas for inclusion in the auction. Last year, ANH initiated a geological survey across various regions, including La Guajira, Antioquia, Córdoba, and the Cauca Valley, to assess the potential for natural hydrogen production. This includes examining existing oil, gas, and coal seam wells for possible hydrogen deposits. Despite the promising prospects of natural hydrogen as a cheaper and cleaner alternative to green hydrogen, concerns about the feasibility of extraction and purification persist.
