Colombia is exploring the potential of natural hydrogen as an energy source, with initial findings indicating the presence of the gas in Valle del Cauca and the Eastern Plains. Studies, including one published in Geosciences in 2023, suggest the existence of natural hydrogen with purity levels comparable to the Mali deposit. However, the country remains in the exploratory phase, and uncertainties persist regarding the viability and economic variables of large-scale extraction. Despite the growing global interest in hydrogen as a clean energy solution, concerns about the future market demand and the high investment required raise questions about the strategic direction of Colombia's hydrogen industry.
