Buried beneath the vast federal lands of the American West, helium remains largely untapped due to outdated policies tying its extraction to oil and gas leases. This linkage stifles exploration and hampers the U.S. from securing a reliable domestic supply for critical industries such as medical imaging, semiconductor manufacturing, and space exploration. The solution proposed is to establish standalone federal helium leases, mirroring the successful model of Saskatchewan, Canada, which has incentivised helium exploration without oil or gas commitments. By adopting such a policy, the U.S. could unlock significant economic and technological benefits, fostering job creation and reinforcing its leadership in global helium markets.
