The US Air Force is funding US$750k a research project exploring the use of helium plasma jets for surface cooling in high-flying jets or spaceships. Initial tests with a helium plasma directed onto a gold-coated surface demonstrated brief cooling effects. The plasma jet vaporised a thin layer of hydrogen and carbon atoms on the material, extracting heat and causing it to cool down. This could have significant implications for efficient and low-energy cooling solutions in electronics and computer chips.
