Lockheed Martin has established a new company called AT2 Aerospace to develop the Z1 hybrid airship, which utilises helium for buoyancy. AT2 aims to create airship solutions for commercial and humanitarian purposes worldwide. The Z1 inherits key features from Lockheed Martin's previous work, while the renewed focus on hybrid airships development aligns with growing interest in airship designs driven by environmental concerns and the pursuit of zero-emission aviation. AT2 joins several companies aiming to grow the airship sector including Thales, Hybrid Air Vehicles, LTA Research, h-aero, Airbus, SoftBank (via its HAPSMobile unit), Stratospheric Platforms, Avealto, and BAE.
