ZettaJoule (ZJ), a Houston based SMR start-up, partnered with Texas University to develop its helium-cooled high-temperature gas reactor (HTGR) research facility at the university’s Nuclear Engineering & Science Center in Texas. The ZJ HTGR, initially proposed as a 30-MWt TRISO-fuelled and helium-cooled HTGR, which can deliver process heat up to 950°C for applications in hydrogen production, steelmaking, and advanced materials research. It has a US$2mm investment to support reactor construction and operational readiness, with plans to integrate multiple modules for expanded thermal capacity. China is already operating one HTGR and building its second plant.
