In the city of Marseilles, France, firefighters are using a tethered helium balloon (an unmanned balloon connected to the ground by a cable) to automatically detect forest fires. The balloon is equipped with a camera, and hovers almost 600m above the ground, enabling it to detect fires 10km away. The helium capacity allows it to stay operational for 24 hours, for up to ten days at a time.
