Researchers have utilised a sophisticated scanning technology called Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to revisit old oil and gas drilling records in the Paris Basin, discovering significant amounts of natural hydrogen. This study analysed a vast number of old documents, transforming them into searchable data to locate hydrogen gas. The most notable discovery was a high concentration of hydrogen (52%) in an area known as the Dogger aquifer, particularly along a geological feature called the Bray Fault. This finding suggests that hydrogen in the Paris Basin might be influenced by the structure of the earth in that area, highlighting the potential of using advanced data analysis techniques to uncover valuable energy resources in historical drilling data.
