This study leverages Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to analyse a vast, previously underutilised database of old drilling records from the Paris Basin in France, revealing significant occurrences of natural hydrogen in various geological formations. Utilising a historical French hydrocarbon database, the research identified hydrogen-rich wells, particularly in the Dogger formation with concentrations up to 52 vol%, primarily along the Bray fault and thrust. These findings, especially the unexpected hydrogen occurrences in the Paris Basin, underscore the untapped potential of natural hydrogen as a clean energy source and demonstrate the value of repurposing historical drilling data for exploration in this emerging energy sector. FDE and 45-8 are the only two companies exploring for natural hydrogen in France.
