Asia's leading semiconductor producers, particularly in South Korea and Taiwan, are poised to maintain their industry dominance against the US's revitalised efforts in chip manufacturing. With an estimated US$450bn in private investments mirroring US financial commitments, South Korea plans to develop the world's largest chipmaking hub, comprising 37 factories across eight cities. This ambitious initiative reflects Asia's strategic response to the US push, emphasising the region's advanced technological expertise, robust supply networks, and governmental support. While sharing common ground in security and politics as US allies, Seoul and Taipei are positioning themselves as formidable contenders in the global semiconductor arena, underscoring the strategic importance of this sector to their economic resilience and growth. This will also lead to a surge in helium demand as helium is critical in the semiconductor manufacturing process.
