Radiant Industries is developing "meltproof" portable nuclear generators that use TRISO particles as fuel and helium as a coolant to generate up to one megawatt of energy, enough to power 1,000 homes. The high melting temperature of the fuel particles and the use of helium as a coolant prevent the reactor from melting down. The company is working with federal laboratories to improve its product and is seeking regulatory approval for its designs and technology. Small scale nuclear is a strong growth market and helium is incorporated in many designs, which suggests that this could lead to significant long-term helium demand growth.
