Altaeros’ Helium-Lifted Wind Turbines Make Successful First Flight

Altaeros Energies, founded by MIT alumni, has successfully tested the first-ever flying wind turbine—known as a Buoyant Air Turbine (BAT)—that uses helium to lift a conventional turbine encased in a 35‑foot inflatable shell to around 1,000–2,000 feet, where wind speeds are 5–8x stronger than at traditional turbine heights.
