The Philippines has initiated an auction for exploration rights to natural hydrogen in two zones located ~200km from Manila, within the western part of Luzon island, covering over ~570k acres combined. These zones, identified as PDA No. 1 and No. 2, have already shown promise with the discovery of hydrogen gas seeps. The Department of Energy highlights the country's geological potential, particularly the Zambales Ophiolite Complex, rich in serpentinised ultramafic rocks, as a prime candidate for hydrogen exploration. With the 2024 Philippine Bid Round open for bids until 27 August, successful applicants will demonstrate extensive exploration experience and financial capability. This initiative has attracted international interest, including from Helios Aragón and Freedom Solar Group's local subsidiary.
