Petrobras, Brazil's national oil and gas company, is dedicating R$20mm (~US$4mm) to explore natural hydrogen production across Brazil, beginning in Bahia as part of its 2024-2028+ Strategic Plan. In 2023, a conference in the city of Marica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the city council discussed the discovery of high concentrations of natural hydrogen. Marica is located in the state adjoining Bahia. This initiative involves training programs and partnerships with local and international experts. With plans to invest US$0.7bn in research and development by 2028, Petrobras is focusing on natural hydrogen as a promising, zero-emission energy source, aligning its operations with sustainable development goals and enhancing its role in the global energy transition.
