The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in collaboration with Texas Tech University, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Rio Tinto, and Lavoisier H2 Geoconsult, has been selected to research natural hydrogen production from iron-rich rocks using chemical, mechanical, and biological methods. The exact funding amount is not revealed but is expected to be ~US$1.6mm. The US Department of Energy (DOE) launched a US$20mm funding initiative through its Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) to explore natural hydrogen. The initiative will not only address the technical feasibility and economic viability of scaling up geologic hydrogen production but also foster job creation and support the US in achieving its decarbonisation goals.
