Helium extraction from LNG production is an economically proven source of helium where the helium percentage averages at 8 mol%. However, helium extraction at earlier stages in the natural gas liquefaction process has motivating factors due to the higher recovery rates. As of now there is 1 economically viable method - cryogenic fractionation - that is widely used. But recent studies have shown that there are better, sustainable methods of helium recovery that lead to a greater reduction in energy and emissions when integrating helium recovery and LNG liquefaction with an 86% reduction for the same scenario.
