Navajo Nation President Vetoes Helium Exploration Resolution

This is a blow to future supply from the helium rich region. Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez vetoed a resolution that would have approved operating lease agreements between the Navajo Nation and Navajo Oil and Gas to explore for helium near two communities, on his last day in office. Nez cited the lack of consensus from the affected chapters, as well as concerns about the threat of water contamination and the legacy of abandoned uranium mines. Proponents of the measure had claimed that helium extraction could produce millions of dollars in revenue.
