Recent studies on natural hydrogen emissions from the Mid-Rift System (MRS) in Kansas and Minnesota provide valuable insights into potential hydrogen generation mechanisms. The Kansas segment shows evidence of hydrogen production through water-rock interactions. In contrast, the Minnesota section of the MRS reveals the presence of methane, helium, carbon dioxide, and up to 500 ppm hydrogen in dissolved and free-gas phases, likely generated by the serpentinisation of iron-rich rocks and involved in methane production via interactions with carbon dioxide. This research enhances understanding of hydrogen sources, presenting significant implications for its potential exploitation as a reliable energy source.
