The State of Utah has submitted comments to the USGS on the helium supply risk for consideration. Utah has adopted a State Resource Management Plan to protect and expand access to mineral resources, including critical minerals and rare earth elements. USGS excluded helium from its 2021 List of Critical Minerals, but the State has requested that helium be included in the upcoming 2025 list due to increasing national reliance on high-risk foreign suppliers.
