The research by Zhang et al. discovered compounds such as FeF2He and FeF3He, stable at pressures below 60 GPa, suggesting that helium and xenon could have been sequestered in Earth's interior during its formation through ternary iron halide compounds. Utilising crystal structure search and first-principles calculations, this study offers fresh perspectives on the conditions of early Earth, potentially advancing our understanding in the distribution of inert elements and helping in helium exploration.
