Helium Enrichment Mechanism in the Sichuan Basin, China

A new study examines helium distribution in the Sichuan Basin in southwest China and its relationship with two regional shale formations, Qiongzhusi and Wufeng-Longmaxi. Helium concentrations increase toward the basin's centre, primarily originating from the granite basement beneath the Qiongzhusi shale. While the Wufeng-Longmaxi shale shows no strong correlation with helium distribution, the Qiongzhusi shale plays a crucial role in helium migration. Uplift processes have reduced helium solubility in water, promoting helium degassing into gas reservoirs. Faults can either enhance or diminish helium accumulation, impacting the distribution of helium-rich fields. Although there is ongoing research exploring different regions of China for helium potential, there is very limited helium production in China making the country reliant on imports.
