Research presented from Stanford University at the American Geophysical Union conference revealed that the delamination process, where the top part of the Indian Tectonic Plate uplifts the Tibetan Plateau and the bottom part sinks into the mantle, has brought the mantle close enough to the Earth's surface to allow helium-3 to escape through springs in northern Tibet. This discovery was made by analysing helium levels in these springs, providing new insights into the geological processes affecting the region's elevation. Helium-3 is very scarce on Earth and could be potentially used in nuclear fusion.
