Gold H2, a Houston-based company spun off from Cemvita (an energy transition company), is pioneering the sustainable production of low-cost hydrogen using bioengineered microbes. Under the leadership of new CEO Prabhdeep Singh Sekhon, the company utilises these microbes in oil wells to convert carbon into clean hydrogen, capitalising on existing oil and gas infrastructure to reduce costs. Initially piloted in 2022 in the Permian Basin, the technology has shown promising results, leading Gold H2 to plan for international expansion and further funding rounds. Sekhon, with his background in strategic roles at NextEra Energy Resources and Hess, is optimistic about leveraging this innovative biotechnology to dominate the hydrogen market.
