Academic Jin Zhijun and his team discovered natural hydrogen concentrations, up to ~0.7%, in the Sanshui Basin, China. This level would be well below the economic threshold but these findings indicate high H2 levels in various fault zones suggesting deep-seated origins like magmatic degassing, serpentinisation, and thermal degradation. Jin proposed a source-transport-capture model for H2 exploration, emphasising the importance of deep faults and salt cap rocks in trapping H2, making the Sanshui and other similar rift basins prime targets for H2 accumulation and exploration.
