The European Commission has approved a €5bn German initiative to support the construction of a new manufacturing facility in Dresden by the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC), a JV including TSMC, Bosch, Infineon, and NXP. This facility, crucial for Europe's digital sovereignty and resilience, will produce advanced microchips using helium-dependent technologies. Helium is vital for achieving the low temperatures required in semiconductor manufacturing and remains an indispensable resource in this sector, underlining the strategic importance of securing its supply as Europe bolsters its semiconductor capabilities.
