The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (Esfri) highlighted the significant challenges faced by science facilities across Europe due to rising energy costs, supply shortages, and extended delivery times caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia–Ukraine war. The report emphasises the impact on finance, shortage of key supplies including helium-3, nitrogen, and materials from Russia, and substantial delays in equipment delivery, affecting the construction, upgrades, and scientific output of research infrastructure. Recommendations include energy consumption reduction plans, increased resilience, and support for the Ukrainian research community. The situation has led to re-optimisation of plans and critical savings for research facilities.
