Early projections suggested a major helium resource, but practical issues such as difficult extraction, localised deposits, stringent regulatory processes, and community opposition have hindered progress. While a few companies continue to pursue potential deposits, many have faced bankruptcy, and the future of helium production in the area remains uncertain, with continued investor hesitance and regulatory hurdles impacting the industry's viability. Companies such as Desert Mountain Energy and Navajo Nation Oil & Gas have either had to exit the region or are still facing delays and pushbacks.
