Bluefors, a cryogenic solutions provider, expanded its Syracuse, US, facility by nearly 45%, marking the first time it will manufacture dilution refrigerators in the US. These refrigerators are crucial for quantum technologies like quantum computing, which require ultra-low temperatures (as low as -273°C). The expansion enhances production capabilities and opens a spare parts hub for faster service. Dilution refrigerators rely on helium, particularly a mixture of helium-4 (the more abundantly available type) and helium-3, due to their unique properties at ultra-low temperatures enable efficient cooling, with helium-3 diluting into helium-4 to create the continuous cooling effect required to reach near absolute zero. The growing quantum technology sector is expected to significantly increase helium demand in the coming decade.
