As we expected, the sole helium production plant in Australia, located in Darwin, has ceased operations after its gas supply from the Santos-owned Darwin LNG plant was exhausted. Linde stated that it would continue supplying Australian and New Zealand customers with imported helium from Linde plants overseas. The Darwin plant, which contributed about 3% of the world's helium supply, shut down due to the depletion of the Bayu-Undan gas field. Santos is exploring potential new helium resources in the Northern Territory, with Central Petroleum also investigating helium recovery in the Amadeus Basin. Santos aims to drill exploration wells in 2024 targeting natural gas and helium.
