The idea of a new mining rush based on natural hydrogen is being explored in South Australia, as the state's amended legislation in 2021 makes hydrogen a regulated substance. Companies such as Gold Hydrogen and H2EX are using clues from "fairy circles" - which are salt pans - to detect possible reservoirs of the element. Geoscience Australia published a map of natural hydrogen prospectivity in Australia, and researchers are studying the process of extracting hydrogen from the Earth in order to determine the size of the national reserves. If successful, the extraction of natural hydrogen could provide a cheaper alternative to manufacturing green hydrogen, and could be used to aid the move towards a green economy.
