China has connected its High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor-Pebble-bed Module (HTR-PM) at Shidaowan, Shandong Province, to the heating grid, marking a significant advancement in fourth-generation nuclear energy use. The HTR-PM had successfully completed initial testing in Dec'23. Developed in collaboration with Tsinghua University and operated by China Huaneng Group, the project utilises two 250 MWt reactors that drive a single 210 MWe steam turbine for residential heating serving 1,850 households. It uses helium as coolant and graphite moderator.
