The Colorado School of Mines (Mines) and the US Geological Survey (USGS) launched a research consortium to explore natural hydrogen as a low-carbon alternative energy source. Combining Mines' expertise in mineral exploration and seismology with USGS's scientific knowledge, the programme aims to advance understanding of naturally occurring hydrogen gas systems and develop technologies for its exploration and extraction. Research will focus on creating a comprehensive hydrogen system model, developing surface and subsurface exploration tools, and employing 3D modelling to guide exploration strategies, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the energy transition and climate change mitigation.
