As helium resources deplete, leading to rising costs and shortages, Shimadzu, a provider of analytical instruments, is seeking alternative gas options for Gas Chromatography (GC) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS). While helium is traditionally preferred for its inertness and high performance, Shimadzu explores the use of alternative carrier gases such as hydrogen and nitrogen. The company emphasises safety and efficiency in adopting hydrogen as a carrier gas, incorporating built-in hydrogen sensors and stainless steel flow paths in their GC systems.
