There is a potential for a new helium resource in the Northern Territory to help relieve the global helium shortage. Australia's only local production of helium is set to end in the coming months, but a joint venture between Central Petroleum, Santos and Peak Helium is investigating the potential to extract helium from the Amadeus Basin south of Alice Springs. An early resource estimate suggests the area could hold around 44bcf of helium. However, further exploration is needed to confirm the estimate. If the resource is commercialised, the helium could be transported to Darwin for processing and sold to the local market.
