Philips Advances Helium-Free MRI Technology

Philips has achieved a significant milestone with the 1,111th installation of its BlueSeal magnet in Puerto Rico. The BlueSeal magnet, known for its resilience against tropical storms and minimal helium use, requires only a 7-litre (0.2mcf) preload of helium during manufacturing and prevents any loss during emergencies, unlike traditional MRI systems that use up to 1,700 litres (45mcf). Phillips claims it has saved 1.9mm litres (50mmcf) of helium since 2018: this works out to just 10mmcf per annum. However, given that >1,000mmcf of helium is consumed each year by the global MRI industry, this is a tiny saving until these can be applied at a global scale.
