Natural Hydrogen Potential in Italy

An EU-funded project completed the first quantitative assessment of natural hydrogen potential in Italy, using a prospectivity index—a ranking tool that combines geological, chemical and geophysical evidence. The study estimates that about 10% of Italy’s surface, or ~30,000 km2, contains rock types favourable for natural hydrogen generation.
