Central Petroleum entered a MoU with Twin Bridges, a US-based helium specialist, to develop a helium recovery unit (HRU) at its Mereenie field in the Northern Territory, Australia targeting up to 60 mcf/d (~20mmmcf p.a.) of compressed helium gas from existing natural gas. Twin Bridges will design, build, fund, and own the HRU, sharing operating profits with Central Petroleum. The project leverages strong helium pricing, and its success could position Mereenie as Australia's sole domestically produced helium source, after the Darwin plant shut down in early 2023. Additionally, it showcases the Amadeus Basin's potential as a world-class helium resource estimated to contain ~45bcf of helium.
