Aragon in Spain, aspires to become the protagonist in the pursuit of natural hydrogen. British investors, through Helios Aragon PTE, are spearheading the initiative, seeking environmental authorisation for initial exploration in Monzón. The project aims to establish the first well of its kind in Europe, in 2024 and commercial exploitation starting in 2028. The plan entails an investment of €900mm, creating a natural hydrogen centre. However, the project faces technical and legal obstacles due to the classification of hydrogen as a hydrocarbon in Spanish legislation. Despite these challenges, Aragon aims to produce 55 ktpa or 23 bcf/y of highly competitive hydrogen, potentially capturing a significant portion of Spain's market.
