Air Products starts-up world’s largest helium storage cavern

Walter Nelson, VP of Global Helium and Rare Gases at Air Products, revealed news about the world’s largest helium storage cavern at the Gasworld Helium Summit in December. This facility has now come online and is fully operational. Located in Beaumont, Texas, the cavern is the size of the Empire State building. The injection and withdrawal rates exceed the current capacity of the BLM system (implying potentially ~1.5mmcf/d of send-out) which enables it to back up any planned or unplanned outages at any sources around the world. The company has also confirmed that it holds exclusive rights to the helium cavern through a long-term storage services agreement.
